In what could be considered to be a coup, Google has snatched the live cricket rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The cricket matches and associated content will be streamed live through the YouTube video service, making it completely free of charge around the world, apart from in the US where a catch up service will be provided.
YouTube will be setting up a dedicated IPL channel for these matches.
There are approximately sixty live matches over the tournament’s forty five days.
Google has managed to secure a two-year deal with the organisers of IPL, which will show all concerned if it is worth making it a longer arrangement, or if some other broadcaster wants to come in and take the IPL away.
