Teletext has licence revoked

The media regulator Ofcom has taken the broadcasting licence off Teletext, the service that runs alongside the normal TV signal to provide information services in a test form.

Under the licence agreement Teletext had to provide a certain level of service, but late last year it pulled pages from the service and was therefore in breach of the licence terms.

After issuing a couple of warnings to Teletext, Ofcom had no option but to revoke the licence, which Teletext has held since 1993.

Teletext followed on from the BBC’s Ceefax service which was in fact initially launched during the 1970s.

Since the rise of the internet Teletext has struggled to keep up.

It used to be the place for cheap travel deals and remained so for a number of years.
