Orange’s investments in fibre optic networks are no longer frozen, with the group pouring €2bn into fibre network growth between now and 2015. The investments will happen in very densely populated areas.

According to a recent report from French services DATAR for territorial development and regional action, bringing very-high speed broadband internet to the whole French territory would amount to €18/30 bn, whether coverage reaches 80% of the population or 100%.

For a €18bn investment, the public financing is estimated to reach €8bn, which is €500m per year over 15 years.

Out of the €4.5bn the French government will put into the digital sector as stated by national loan , €2 bn will go to fibre.

The report underlines that without such an initiative, 25 to 40% of the population only will benefit from fiber in 2014.

At the end of December 2009, there were only 255,000 subscribers to very high-speed broadband internet in France.
