Microsoft to unveil Windows Mobile 7 next week?

Come the World Mobile Congress on Monday, the buzz – not the Google variety, the rumour – is that Microsoft will be showing off the next incarnation of its Windows Mobile operating system.

It’s expected that Steve Ballmer will be talking up Windows Mobile 7, and the OS will need a considerable boost to compete with rivals such as Apple and Google.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the new version will feature a revamped interface roughly modelled on Microsoft’s Zune HD.

In other words, it will be less business-like and more consumer friendly, in an effort to carve out a bigger share of the mobile market.

Previously, the rumour mill had it that Microsoft wouldn’t be releasing Windows Mobile 7 unit next year’s World Mobile Congress.

However, if they are previewing it come next week, odds are that an end of the year launch is back in the frame – possibly even Autumn.

The earlier the better for Microsoft, that’s for sure, as the company is losing ground to the likes of Android on a monthly basis.
