BBC should not pay too much for sports

February 17, 2010

The BBC Trust’s review of how the broadcaster operates is coming up with some curious ideas for change.

Some may say that there are even conflicting reports being produced.

One of the major options being considered by the Trust concerns sport, which has become a battleground for broadcasters as they compete for the contracts to show top sporting events on television.

But it seems that the BBC may be paying too much for money for them.

The plan is to introduce a benchmarking test to establish that the broadcaster is paying a fair price for sports rights.

It is likely that the BBC will simply not be able to afford top sporting events unless Ofcom imposes limits on what sporting organisations can charge for the rights.
