Alex laptop launched for the computer-phobic

There are plenty of people out there who won’t touch a computer because they’re scared of them.

And this is a market the Broadband Computer Company is hoping to address with its laptop creation which goes by the name of Alex.

Even the name sounds friendlier, and lacks the traditional at least four numbers and two letters which normally accompany a laptop moniker (the “Solar Breeze 5645CE II”, for example).

The Alex computer doesn’t run Windows, but rather a custom user interface (built atop Linux) featuring a very simple system of buttons which can be used to access the main tasks the average user needs.

If you want to check your Inbox, you simply click on the email icon and you’re away. The company sets up your email account on the laptop, so no technical know-how is required at all.

Broadband access is also included in the price of the computer, so there’s no worrying about which ISP to sign up with. And technical support is available online and via the phone in case you should run into any trouble.

However, the catch comes with the price. The Alex laptop costs £40 per month, on a two year contract, which adds up to almost a grand in total.

Granted, broadband access is included in that price, but even when you deduct that expense, it still seems like a rather dear laptop. The specs of the notebook aren’t mentioned, aside from the 15 inch display, but we can assume they won’t be cutting edge given the type of user this is aimed at.

However, Alex might be a new lease of life for those who are truly scared of technology, and would never be able to get online otherwise.

Edit: Specs are below in the comments section, they were listed on the website, just that I failed to find them. Thanks David.
