Pan-European 24 hour news channel EuroNews is negotiating with Spain’s government a solution to its leaving national public broadcaster RTVE as a partner. The channel could end up as part of Spain’s digital-terrestrial platform.

RTVE gave up EuroNews shares in 2007 without fulfilling its promises that carried on until 2008 declared Philippe Cayla, EuroNews’ president. Since then the Pan-European channel has been trying to reach an agreement with RTVE without any result.

According to the newspaper ABC, Spain’s government will reach that sought-after agreement from EuroNews in this first half of the year, coinciding with Spain’s presidency of the European Union.

For EuroNews’ president a satisfactory solution would be to have a licence to broadcast on Spain’s DTT since there are still digital frequencies to be freed up and distributed to new broadcasters.

In the meantime EuroNews is holding conversations with Spain’s regional channels and is now about to sign agreements with some. Among other proposals the regional Basque channel ETB has asked to have one news bulletin per day in the Basque language included on EuroNews programming schedule.

Other advanced negotiations are being carried out with the channels of the regions of Andalucía and the Balearic Islands.
