Astra takes control of Sirius

The leading direct-to-home satellite service provider, SES Astra, has taken complete control of the satellite fleet operator SES Sirius, following a deal that see SES Astra buying the remaining ten per cent of shares from the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) for an undisclosed fee.

SES Astra has been a shareholder in SES Sirius since late 2000 when it acquired a fifty per cent holding, but over the last ten years the company has gradually been buying up shares up to the point where it owned ninety per cent of the company.

The takeover does not necessarily mean any immediate changes to the set-up of either company, although SES Astra has stated that there will be a Sweden-based operation but in what context remains to be seen.
