Sony offloads LCD factory to Kyocera

Electronics giant Sony is selling its LCD production facility in Yasu, Japan to arch-rival Kyocera.

Sony will suffer a significant loss on the Y18,5bn that it paid just 5 years ago to buy the factory.

Yasu makes smaller LCD displays, mostly used in mobile phones and similar-sized devices.

Sony bought the factory from Taiwan’s Chi Mei Optoelectronics back in 2005.

Chi Mey itself bought the facility from IBM in 2001.

Sony, it seems, has had a change of heart about being involved in the increasingly commoditised small-screen market, and the move echoes similar disposal decisions by Sony as it attempts to cut costs.

Sony’s position on ‘next generation’ OLED displays is also uncertain given that in February Sony halted sales on its OLED units.
