Regional news pilots could be delayed

by David Allen

It was only last week when the culture secretary, Ben Bradshaw, announced the winners of the regional new pilot initiatives, where news and some other regional content will be made by independent broadcasters.

The bids were submitted and awarded for Scotland, Wales and the north east of England, and a standstill period was put in place until the 6th April.

This is a time period during which the winning bidders can get all their data together and present their plans.

However, due to the forthcoming election announcement with the next couple of days, the standstill period has been extended until the 16th April.

This delay means that the contracts cannot be signed before the general election and therefore fuels the rumours that should the conservatives win, the scheme will be cancelled altogether.
