Strong demand for Kabel BW HDTV Receiver

by Rapid TV News

An increasing number of customers of Germany’s third-largest cable operator Kabel BW are opting for high-definition television.

Since an HDTV receiver was introduced as the standard box at the end of 2009 and an HDTV hard-disk recorder has been offered, more than 40,000 households have ordered one of the two.

Kabel BW, which serves 2.3 million households, says that demand is stronger than expected; therefore there could be delays in delivery of the receivers to customers.

“We are happy that we receive such strong interest in our new receiver generation by our customers. In conjunction with our large channel choice, we have managed to convince our customers of HDTV,” Stefan Beberweil, head of the product management department, said in Heidelberg.

Kabel BW is currently distributing 19 HDTV channels - Germany’s largest HD offer on cable.

The line-up includes public channels Das Erste HD and ZDF HD, commercial broadcasters such as Anixe HD, Luxe.TV HD and Servus TV HD as well as pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland’s complete HD package.

Since December 2009, Kabel BW has also been offering its own HD pay-TV bouquet which includes channels such as MTVN HD, Deluxe Lounge HD and Classica HD.

The company wants to boost the number of HD channels on its cable network to up to 30 by the end of the year.

Negotiations are, for example, underway with Germany’s largest commercial TV groups RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 for the distribution of their HD channels.
