Astra launches 3DTV demo channel

April 22, 2010

The satellite provider SES Astra is making space available on its Astra satellite to broadcast a 3D demo channel.

The Astra satellite is used to carry the UK satellite channels from BSkyB and Freesat.

However viewers won’t be getting access to the free 3D channel, as this will be aimed at retailers, to help them market the 3D idea to customers in store.

The material broadcast in 3D will be across the range of content, including sport, film, entertainment and music.

The 3D channel will also be used by installers and engineers to check the 3D transmission when testing new televisions and satellite equipment at the point of installation.

SES Astra has not announced whether this will be an encrypted channel or not, but either way it will be available at 23.5 degrees east orbital.
