Portugal’s analogue switch off is now nearer than ever.

The country’s national telecommunications authority, ANACOM, has revealed its timetable for switch off - a process to be finalised on April 26 2012.

According to the calendar, switch off will be accomplished in three different phases: the first forecast for January 7 2012 which includes the coastline area.

The second, foreseen for March 22 2012 includes the Açores and Madeira regions.

The third and final phase will take place on April 26 2012 and covers the rest of the country.

This project involves the country’s main telecommunications operator Portugal Telecom, the national public broadcaster RTP and the national private broadcasters SIC and TVI.

There are now 20 days for those companies to give the go ahead or protest.

According to ANACOM: “Given the high social sensibility of this process and the complicated operational process it is convenient to accomplish a previous phase to the three ones legally proposed in the first and second quarters of 2011.”

This means the implementation of some pilot projects of digital switch-overs in some specific areas.
