ASA clears Sky HD promotion

The advertising standard authority (ASA) has cleared the in store demonstrations that are part of BSkyB’s marketing for the Sky+ HD service.

The BSkyB demo units, which can found in most electrical outlets, show a TV screen split into two, with an SD picture on one side and the HD picture on the other.

ASA received complaints from consumers that the left hand SD picture did not represent a true image and that it was designed to make consumers purchase a new Sky+ HD set top box and subscribe to the Sky HD digital TV service.

However, BSkyB argued that the SD images was set at a constant bitrate of 3.5 Mbps and this is typical of an SD picture.

ASA agreed with BSkyB.
