Sony PSP 2 to be unveiled at E3?

Here’s another one freshly ground from the rumour mill, regarding a possible follow up to Sony’s handheld.

MCV reckons that Sony could be lifting the lid on the PSP 2 at the E3 games show next month.

The games industry paper reports that there has been a significant increase in projected marketing spend for the fourth quarter at two big publishers.

Given that the PSP itself isn’t particularly doing much at the moment, and the recent PSPgo has been widely regarded as a failure, there’s only one conclusion to draw from this upsurge in marketing money.

The PSP 2 must be on its way later this year, MCV theorises, and E3 would be the place where a big surprise announcement would obviously happen.

This is backed up by the nugget of info another publisher told MCV, namely that “it is waiting on a specific announcement from the platform holder before it can reveal [anything] of its future PSP plans”.

If Sony is rolling out a new PSP, it’ll have to be something special, as it would be going toe-to-toe with the Nintendo 3DS, also set to be revealed at E3.

The 3DS will allow players to partake of 3D gaming without any accessories such as goofy specs required. Which is pretty much a necessity when it comes to mobile gaming.

It’s bad enough having to sit in the cinema or your living room with a daft pair of goggles on, let alone on the bus.
