Liberty Global plans super set top box

May 19, 2010

The Europe based cable provider Liberty Global is planning to roll out a super, all-IP set top box that is quite capable of handling video, voice and even data content and then displaying it at multiple points throughout the home.

Liberty Global will be commissioning Samsung to build the unit, which is going to be powered by an Intel Atom CE media processor, while the middleware and other user technology will be provided by NDS.

The set top box will be based on flash technology with Nagravision supplying the NAGRA media access.

There will of course be Wi-Fi and the device will be included in with the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) ecosystem.

According to the CTO of Liberty Global, Balan Nair, this is going to be a set top box on steroids.
