3 undercuts rivals with iPad data charges

Mobile network operator 3 has revealed its iPad tariffs just two days before the device hits the shelves in the UK.

All 3G data plans will be available without a contract, so you can opt in or out at any time.

The options are simple: 1GB of data usage can be picked up for £7.50 per month, and 10GB for £15.

“3 is pleased to offer competitive data plans for iPad with wi-fi + 3G in the UK,” said Marc Allera, Sales and Marketing Director at 3. “Our network, the largest in the country, has been optimized for the mobile Internet, ensuring our customers enjoy the very best mobile performance on iPad.”

The pricing stands up well against rival networks. O2, for example, charge £10 per month for 1GB. And for £15 with O2, you get 3GB, just a third of the data limit 3 is offering.

Orange offers the same 3GB a month for £15, and if you want 10GB on Orange, you have to fork out £25 per month.

Interestingly, even 3 itself only provides 3GB per month for £15 going by its standard mobile 3G tariff. Whether this rate is due for adjustment with the arrival of the iPad, we shall have to see.

At any rate, if you’re happy with 3′s network quality in your area and are about to purchase an iPad 3G, on the pricing alone, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.
