iPlayer will be running on iPad tomorrow

We all know what day tomorrow is – you can’t have missed the fact that it’s iPad day in the UK.

The tablet will be shipping out to those who pre-ordered it early enough, and it will be available in Currys and PC World stores up and down the country, as well as select Apple outlets.

And if you’re one of the first-day adopters, you’ll probably be pleased to hear that the iPlayer beta site will be up and running for the tablet tomorrow.

At least according to Mark Prigg, the Evening Standard’s Science and Technology Editor, who tweeted the following yesterday: “iPad version of the beta iPlayer site will be up and running by friday, Erik Huggers says”.

Erik Huggers being the Director of BBC Future Media and Technology.

The normal iPlayer site wouldn’t work fully due to the lack of Flash on the iPad, which is why there needs to be a specific version of the website for Apple’s tablet.

A proper dedicated iPlayer app will probably be available for the iPad eventually, but that may be some time, due to hesitation on the part of the BBC Trust about whether or not Auntie should be treading into apps territory.

Still, a web version for the iPlayer should do for the time being.

The iPlayer is INDEED running on the iPAD, just watched “have I got news for you” and it performed perfectly. Now we just need the various news videos converted. But then as iPhone video will work on everything else, why do we need Flash any more? The quality on the iPAD is superb, incidentally.
