iPhone users sing Opera’s praises

Opera has published its monthly State of the Mobile Web report, which shows a surge in the numbers using Opera Mini.

The mobile browser uses specially designed technology to speed up browsing by using data compression routines.

And it has only just been released for the iPhone last month, in a surprise move from Apple, who many thought wouldn’t approve a rival browser on its smartphone.

However, approve it did, and according to Opera’s figures, a massive 2.6 million iPhone users have downloaded Opera Mini in the last two weeks of April.

This means that Opera Mini now has a total of 58.9 million users, a 6.6% increase on the previous month of March (and a 152% increase on April 2009).

The Apple iPhone has swiftly become the number three device used by Opera Mini devotees across the world.

And the iPhone has shot straight to the number one spot in the US for the most popular device using Opera Mini, beating out the previous holder of that title, the BlackBerry range. (In the UK, the iPhone is number four).

The desktop Opera browser is also doing quite well for itself of late, thanks to help from Microsoft’s new browser choice screen.
