Tweet music to Stephen Fry’s ears

Stephen Fry, the host of QI and prolific Twitterer, has been judging what he thinks is the “most beautiful tweet” ever made.

The award was given out at the 2010 Hay Festival. Fry picked out his favourite from a flood of entries that Tweeters from across the world had sent in.

The winning sub-140 character masterpiece was: “I believe we can build a better world! Of course, it’ll take a whole lot of rock, water & dirt. Also, not sure where to put it”.

Which is a nicely expressed little joke, we think. It was penned, or rather typed, by a Canadian, Marc MacKenzie (http://twitter.com/marcmack).

Marc didn’t have many followers before the award, but that number has shot up to over 1,000 this morning, and will doubtless grow far more than that before the day is out.

He tweeted his reaction to the accolade: “Can’t sleep. Too keyed up on praise from @StephenFry. Maybe I need a huge ’screw you’ from @HughLaurie to balance it out”.

We’re sure Hugh could oblige.

Stephen Fry himself now has 1.5 million followers on Twitter, a pretty impressive figure indeed.

But not nearly as much as some. Britney Spears has over 5 million followers. And that’s just the photographers tailing her down to the mall.
