More on iPhone 4: Tesco will sell, Orange unveils tariffs

The latest on the iPhone 4, which went on pre-order yesterday with Apple (though it’s reportedly now sold out), is that Tesco Mobile is joining the party.

The company will stock the Apple smartphone, along with O2, Vodafone, 3, T-Mobile and Orange. So that’s pretty much everyone now, apart from Virgin of course.

And the other development in the fourth-gen iPhone world is that Orange has gone ahead and published its tariffs.

The not-so-good news is that if you want to get an iPhone 4 16GB (on a two year deal) for free with Orange, you’re looking at the £75 per month plan.

That does give you unlimited voice calls, texts and mobile Internet, plus a bonus of 100 European voice minutes and 20MB of continental Internet. But even so, it’s a very hefty bill every month.

However, if you scale back to the £45 per month contract, the phone only costs £29 (£139 if you want the 32GB model). That comes with 1200 minutes, and unlimited texts and Internet.

Those paying a more average tariff such as £35 per month will be asked to fork out £119 for the 16GB iPhone 4, and £219 for the 32GB version. And of course, these prices are hiked further if you want to drop to an 18 month contract.

For comparison, if yesterday’s leaked Vodafone tariffs are correct (which seems to be the case), on £35 per month the 16GB handset costs £89, which is £30 cheaper than Orange. Vodafone seems like it will be cheaper across the board.

The iPhone 4 comes out on June 24th, just a week tomorrow, and still most operators haven’t announced full pricing plans.

Vodafone’s plan has only been leaked, and is still subject to confirmation, whereas O2 has revealed tariffs but not the actual cost of the handset. We’re still waiting to hear anything at all from the others.
