XP flaw exploited by hackers

June 18, 2010

A flaw in Windows XP has been highlighted and is currently being exploited by hackers to deploy malware, according to a Google researcher, Tavis Ormandy.

This issue can be found in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, but only if the HCP protocol is enabled.

This can be very serious for the user, as a hacker could get into the system and execute commands without the user knowing anything about it.

However Microsoft is looking at this threat as a minor issue, but has issued a one click fix tool that should short the issue out temporarily until it is able to get a patch released to prevent it becoming a major headache.

Initially Microsoft failed to act on this issue, according to Tavis Ormandy, which was why he published details of the flaw.
