BT to offer Sky Sports on Freeview

June 21, 2010

The media regulator Ofcom will allow BT to offer its customers Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 on its Freeview digital TV service.

BT will be allowed to use part of the spectrum that will be freed up after the digital switchover has been completed, to offer the sports channels through the terrestrial digital TV service.

This move follows on from the wholesale price changes forced upon BSkyB by the regulator.

In this case, it would mean BT saving around 23.4 per cent and would therefore make offering premium content viable.

Despite an appeal being logged by BSkyB over these price cuts, it seems inevitable that the changes will remain in place and therefore the sports channels will be made available to a much wider audience.

For me the sky sports on BT Vision is a waste of time as I cannot get BT Vision because you need at least 2meg min for it to work even though I am only 7 miles from Nottingham the max I can get is 1.5 and I would suspect that that applies to a large percentage of the population. Funny how BT do not say about line speed when advertising BT Vision
