Apple iPhone 4 released, 3 reveals tariffs

Today was the day that Apple finally released its fourth generation iPhone to the masses.

And it was a day that perhaps won’t go down in the annals of history, but it was certainly a big event for many smartphone fans, who queued to get their mitts on a shiny new iPhone 4.

More folks queued overnight at Apple’s flagship store in Regent Street to get the iPhone 4 than the iPad, it seems (and indeed, across the country).

V3.co.uk estimates that nearly a thousand people were present at the opening of the London flagship shop, some of whom had queued overnight. And they were still lining up later in the day, according to reports.

This isn’t particularly surprising, given the record level of pre-orders the phone racked up at the Apple store online – some 600,000 on just the first day alone.

In other iPhone 4 news, 3 has unveiled its tariffs for the smartphone. 3’s deals start at £30 per month (over two years), with 500 minutes (and 5000 3 to 3 minutes), 5000 texts and 1GB of Internet, and the 16GB phone costing £99. The 32GB model is £189.

That’s pretty generous compared to Vodafone, for example, who only offer 300 minutes on a £30 per month tariff, and charge £169 for the 16GB phone.

For £35 per month, 3’s tariff remains exactly the same – even the price of the phone – but the company gives you an extra 400 voice minutes, making 900 minutes in total. Again, for comparison, you have to go to £40 per month on Vodafone to get 900 minutes.

On the £45 per month tariff, 3 gives the 16GB iPhone 4 to the customer for free (the 32GB model still has an up-front charge of £89). That comes with 2000 minutes, but is otherwise the same as the other deals.

So 3 is looking pretty competitive here, even though it isn’t offering any iPhone 4 deals below the £30 per month mark.

T-Mobile is still yet to announce its prices, being the only network left to do so, and leaving it seemingly more than a little bit late.
