YouTube wins Viacom case

Google is in a celebratory mood following a decision by a judge to throw out the $1 billion lawsuit brought by broadcaster Viacom, which accused Google-owned YouTube of allowing copyrighted material onto its site without gaining permission first.

According to the judge, neither Google nor YouTube could be held responsible for videos uploaded onto the site that could be posted illegally.

For Google this is a thumbs up from the authorities for what they do, although companies like Viacom have claimed that tens of thousands of obviously copyrighted videos have been posted on YouTube.

It is assumed that Viacom will be appealing against this ruling as they have invested a lot of time and money into the case, but there is no guarantee that the decision will change.
