Apple smartphone owning golf fans will doubtless be interested in The R&A’s official Open 2010 app for the iPhone.

It’s designed to bring coverage of the fairway and green action from St Andrews straight to your handset, and the app features a redesign for the 150th anniversary of the British Open.

It brings you live weather updates (rain, rain and more rain at the moment in Scotland) and a live leaderboard, along with a full course guide and player profiles.

Video on demand also features, and a live stream from holes 9, 10 and 11, so you can follow the mid-course action directly. If this “LiveCast” video isn’t available in your region, apparently you will get Radio Opengolf instead. (“He swings, he hits the ball… it’s in the air… it’s landed on some grass…).

The latest version of the app has been tested on iOS4, with some compatibility fixes being applied so it should run smoothly on Apple’s latest smartphone.

The Open Championship 2010 app is available for free from the iTunes store.
