UK viewers could get the iPlayer with Freesat

July 20, 2010

At the recent Freesat awards ceremony in London, the US based set top box maker, EchoStar, let it be known that it was looking at the free to view satellite digital TV provider Freesat as a future partner.

Further to the news that Freesat is thinking about offering a pay TV option, it seems that the issue with the majority of Freesat’s set top boxes not having an integrated card slot is already being worked on with a new set top box.

The EchoStar design will not only include the missing card slot, but will also be a premium machine with the BBC iPlayer and a personal video recorder included.

However, for Freesat this means providing a Freesat+ set top box and it will have to charge enough to cover the cost.
