The digital TV battle has been waging in Italy between Sky Italia and Mediaset.
However, it seems that Sky Italia has been given a major boost with its plans to gain a foothold in the Italian digital terrestrial television with the EU accepting the broadcaster’s plans.
Initially this means very little for Sky Italia, but in the longer term the Italian regulator AGCom will be allocating the digital spectrum and this is where the broadcasters will be getting down to business.
According to Tom Mockeridge, the chief executive of Sky Italia, the company is pleased with the decision which has the potential to open up the Italian digital TV market to open competition.
In 2003, News Corp agreed to hold Sky Italia back from entering the DTT market until 2012. This has been waived.
