No Ashes for the BBC

by David Allen

It seems that the Ashes cricket tournament will remain on Sky Sports at least until the end of the current contracts.

This is bad news for the cricket fans who do not subscribe to Sky Sports.

Yet on the other hand, for the governing bodies this means that their multi million pound annual incomes will remain intact, the only difference being that thirty per cent of the income from TV will have to be spent at grassroots level.

The decision was announced by the sports minister, Hugh Robertson, who was a critic of the review panel which decides what sporting events are considered to be untouchable or, as they have become known, “The Crown Jewels”.

The decision does not mean that the Olympics, World Cup, Wimbledon and The Grand National are at risk, as these are currently protected.
