Ray Mears called in when technology failed

July 23, 2010

The outdoor and survival expert Ray Mears helped the police track down the gunman Raoul Moat in the thick undergrowth of the Northumberland countryside.

Ray Mears has had several series on BBC2 showing how to survive in the wild, with little or no kit.

This is clearly something that the fugitive had knowledge of as he was able to remain undetected for around a week, even though the police had access to the latest technology including a helicopter fitted with heat seeking camera equipment.

Yet all of that technology could not find the man and so the police called in Ray Mears after they found his abandoned camp.

It has not been released exactly what the role of Ray Mears was, only that he advised the police on where to look.
