Hong Kong Kinect demo goes badly

Microsoft is taking its Kinect motion control system out on a road show tour of the UK, which began on Saturday and will run up until Christmas.

But the company will be hoping that this goes better than a recent demo of Kinect Sports by a pair of models at a Hong Kong show, which Develop highlighted.

The demo of a hurdle race saw the player’s avatars freeze on screen for around ten seconds, as the models continued to run on the spot. Eventually, they got going again in a slightly stuttering manner, and all this didn’t exactly make the best impression on the watching crowd.

Of course, the conditions of the event weren’t ideal, with many camera flashes going off that may have affected the device, Develop theorises. The girls may also have been standing too close together (at the start of the footage on YouTube, the system seems to be telling one of them to move to the left).

The demo draws unfortunate attention to the potential limitations of Microsoft’s system. It’ll be interesting to see how well it performs at the Alton Towers and other Kinect road show dates the company has planned around the UK.
