The Discovery Channel has received a 3D channel licence from Ofcom, taking it a step further towards making its programmes available in 3D for European viewers.

At the beginning of the year the company announced 3D plans in the US, in partnership with Sony and IMAX, but has not yet revealed any details of a possible 3D service in Europe.

3D could be a exciting medium for Discovery, whose channels cover visually compelling wildlife, space and science programmes.

Imagine a 3D blue whale in your living room!

If a UK 3D launch comes off for Discovery, the channel could be the first to join the Sky platform, with Sky 3D expected to launch to consumers on 1 October.
