Skype announces £63 fundraising in US

Internet phone company Skype is planning an initial public offering (IPO) in the US in order to raise around £63m.

The company will use the funding for expansion, with plans to attract more customers and introduce new services, including integrating Skype in televisions and mobile devices.

It also hopes to develop its business services.

The flotation follows eBay’s sale of a 70% share in Skype to a consortium led by buyout firm silver Lake Partners, in November 2009.

In Europe, Skype is facing opposition from BSkyB over its application for a trademark.

BSkyB is arguing that ‘Skype’ could be easily confused with its own ‘Sky’ trademark.
