TalkTalk follows BT in upping landline rental

Following in the wake of BT’s 50 pence hike to landline rental charges scheduled for October, TalkTalk is introducing the same measure itself.

TalkTalk’s monthly line rental will go up from £11.49 to £12.04, which represents a 55 pence increase, slightly more than BT imposed.

The increase will also come into effect in October, along with price rises on call charges, with daytime call fees increasing from 5.8 pence per minute to 6.4 pence, the Guardian reports. That represents a 10% increase.

There have been calls of hypocrisy from PC Pro, who point out that TalkTalk was staunchly against the government’s proposed 50 pence per month broadband tax when that idea was floated.

At the time, TalkTalk said that the increase the tax brought would mean 100,000 mainly poorer homes would be forced to give up their broadband.

TalkTalk told PC Pro that this was a price rise, not a tax, and that the 100,000 figure referred to the entire industry, whereas TalkTalk was positioned at the budget end of the market anyway.
