by Janet Harris

While security was one of the areas where companies cut back during the recession, analyst Gartner forecast that worldwide spending on security software will increase 11 per cent to $16.5bn this year.

Gartner also expects spending on security software, such as anti-virus and anti-phishing products, to continue to increase over the next few years.

The analyst highlighted software-as-a-service (SaaS) and compliance as two key growth areas.

Purchasing security software through SaaS and appliances is forecast to become more popular than traditional software licensing.

Gartner expects the consumer segment to maintain its lead over the enterprise market, with spending by consumers reaching $4.2 billion in 2010, while enterprises expected to spend $3 billion.
