Warning over Facebook “Dislike” button scam

Facebook users be warned that a new application which installs a “Dislike” button is a scam.

The social network has a “Like” button for users to approve of something, and this plays upon the similarity to that, claiming to offer an “official” alternative to liking.

Of course, what it actually does is give the scammers access to your profile, whereby they post a status update with a link to try and ensnare your friends as well. Graham Cluley, security expert at Sophos reports that the message is something like: “I just got the Dislike button, so now I can dislike all of your dumb posts lol!!”

The rogue application then tries to get you to complete an online survey in order to receive your special button. The survey is the actual scam, from which the authors generate money.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be pointed to a free Firefox add-on by FaceMod. This is actually a Dislike button, though it’s nothing to do with the scammers, as far as the folks at Sophos can tell.

I never install anything that isn’t required – This way I can stay well clear of any infected files.
