ASA reckons PS3 visuals sharper than Xbox

The Advertising Standards Authority has come out with a statement which is bound to cause controversy in the war of the consoles.

This affair started due to a complaint about a Square Enix TV ad, which used footage from the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII to advertise the Xbox 360 game.

The complaint stated that the PS3 image quality was sharper, and therefore it wasn’t fair to use it to demonstrate the Xbox version.

ASA watched the full-motion video sequences in question playing on the Xbox and PS3 on side-by-side displays, and did indeed conclude that the PS3 held a slightly better image quality. The body therefore ordered the ad not to be shown again in its current form.

Square Enix acknowledged that the ad sequences were played back on the PS3 for technical reasons, to allow “advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert”, the Telegraph reports.

The company argued there was no “substantive” visible difference between the images of FF XIII on the two consoles, except in High Definition. And even then, it said the majority of viewers wouldn’t be able to detect the difference.

This will likely cause waves of disturbance down at the Microsoft camp, who most certainly won’t be appreciative of the PS3 being labelled as graphically superior, no matter how slight the advantage is deemed to be.

  1. Yes, PS3 visuals are better on FFXIII, because it was made on an engine that was designed for PS3, then ported to 360.

It’s a bit stupid to make a generalisation based on that.

There are differences in 720p, which are pretty obvious when looking at captures side by side, but I’m surprised anyone picked up on it from a TV ad.

  2. Lets see how many American gaming sites pick up and report this news, rather choosing to ignore it, and carry on pixel counting and comparing cherry picked multiplatform titles that look better on Xbox under microscopes.
