Amazon Kindle sells out before Friday launch

The new and improved third generation of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader had its launch date set for this Friday.

But if you were hankering for some serious e-reading action come the weekend, you may be disappointed, as Amazon UK has already sold out of the device.

And that’s both the wi-fi only model (the cheaper one at £109), and the 3G version (priced at £149).

Amazon states that due to high demand, Kindle stocks have been depleted and there are no more currently available. However, you can still order to reserve your place in the queue on a first-come, first-served basis. Orders placed today, the site says, are expected to be shipped on September 17th, so you’ve three (and a bit) weeks to wait yet.

The Kindle 3 offers a number of enhancements over its predecessors, including a more slimline design, faster response times, and a new high contrast screen with crisper fonts that are easier on the old peepers.
