The latest report from Symantec Hosted Services lists the UK as one of the top four countries in terms of the highest volume of spam sent from infected PCs.

Spam sent from the UK almost doubled in August according to Symantec’s MessageLabs Intelligence report, to account for 4.5 per cent of the spam sent globally.

The amount of spam sent from botnets has increased by 11 per cent and now accounts for a massive 95% of the total.

The highest number of bots were found in the US and Rustock was the most active spam-sending botnet, with a six percent increase in spam emails each day.

Although the number of bots under Rustock’s control actually fell from two million in April to 1.3 million in August, the amount of spam sent from each bot per minute doubled.

Eight per cent of the bots under Rustock’s control were located in the UK.

Oman suffered the most phishing attacks in August with this problem affecting 1 in 185.3 emails.

Symantec has also warned of a huge increase in the number of spam emails announcing that a celebrity has died in an accident.

The company is warning users not to open the messages which are designed to spread malware through bogus links or attachments.
