Qualcomm to produce 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon next year

Qualcomm has announced that it will be hitting the market with a beefy 1.5GHz processor next year.

V3.co.uk reports that at the IQ 2010 conference, CEO Paul Jacobs revealed that the dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon will appear later on in 2011.

A dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon will be in production earlier than that, and should be out in the first half of next year.

While smartphones packing these processors should obviously be pretty darn speedy, particularly when combined with whatever efficiency boosts new operating systems bring in 2011, the question has to be asked: How much speed does a mobile phone really need?

And more to the point, what are these chips going to be like regarding power consumption and battery life? As ever, we’ll have to wait for the answer to questions like these…
