Google Instant live search coming shortly to Opera

You’re unlikely to have missed the launch of Google Instant this week, the search giant’s attempt at increasing the scope of predictive searching and going beyond mere suggestions.

Along with suggestions of what your search query might turn out to be, Instant provides real-time search results being updated as you type, flicking past underneath the search box. If you’re logged into your Google account in the UK, you’ll doubtless have already experienced this.

On IE8, Firefox, Chrome and Safari browsers that is, which were the launch clients for Google Instant.

One major web browser is missing from that list, of course, and that’s Opera, currently the fifth most popular but still holding an appreciable market share of around the 2.5% mark.

However, the good news for Opera addicts – or indifferent news for some, perhaps – is that Google Instant is on the way for the browser. A Google spokesperson told Cnet: “We hope to support Opera shortly after launch”.

The use of the word shortly hopefully means it shouldn’t be long before Instant searching is available on the browser. Until then, there is a workaround you can use to get it going on Opera if you’re overly keen to see the live search feature in action.

An article on Techie Buzz shows that all you need to do is go to the Google web page, right click an empty spot, select Edit Site Preferences, go to the Network tab and under the Browser Identification menu, select Identify as Firefox. Then refresh the Google home page and Instant should be working.

Basically you’re fooling Google into thinking that you’re on Firefox. You may or may not run into trouble this way, however, as obviously Google didn’t intend to have Instant working like this. Some folks have reported JavaScript errors cropping up when using this Opera workaround, for example.
