Nokia poaches Microsoft executive

Nokia has appointed Stephen Elop, the head of Microsoft’s business division, as its new CEO.

Nokia’s current chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, has led the mobile phone company since 2006.

According to a recent report from YouGov, Nokia’s market share fell substantially in the first six months of this year.

Around Christmas last year around half of shoppers said they might buy a Nokia handset next time around but by June this had dropped to 39 per cent.

One of the problems affecting Nokia is a lack of apps for its phones, which is pushing consumers towards brands such as Apple and Google.

Nokia is banking on its new chief’s experience to put the company back on a path to growth.

Elop, an American, is Nokia’s first non-Finnish chief executive.
