Papal Visit to UK: Memorabilia

by Brian Turner

This week’s Papal visit - the first for 28 years - has certainly stirred the headlines in various different ways.

On the one hand, we’ve had polls showing that most people don’t care or that the Roman Catholic Church should at least cover the million-pound policing bill.

Protestants are up in arms, Catholics just don’t seem too bothered, and the whole event is being down-sized to lack of expected enthusiasm.

And now it seems…memorabilia has become the next big interesting Papal topic.

After all, it may not be another 28 years or more before the Papacy can dare steel itself to visit a stalwart Protestant country such as Great Britain, which under Henry VIII managed to wedge a great crack under the foundations of Papal authority.

So anything to remember this week’s occasion might be worth a bob or two in the future. If you’re lucky.

Because the next visit could be a long time coming if the lack of enthusiasm surrounding the current one is anything to go by.

Ship of Fools has composed it’s own list of irrelevant memorabilia.

But New Statesman clearly finds a favourite:

The Benedictaphone.

Yes, a super gadget indeed for recording the words of a man renown to give good mass.

Or anyone else whose words you’d like to be able to replay over and over again.

Perhaps the police in Belgium can use one next time they’re asked for a warrant.

In the meantime, we can only say “God bless the Pope”. And then play it back repeatedly on the Benedictaphone to the great amusment or annoyance to those around.

Personally, I’d love to know if anyone would dare gift Pope Benedict XVI one as a present.

Perhaps he could use it to record greetings to play back when he’s tired.

Aw, bless.
