Sir Michael Lyons to leave BBC Trust

by Janet Harris

Despite previously saying he would like to seek re-appointment, Sir Michael Lyons has decided to step down a chairman of the BBC Trust when his term in office ends in May 2011.

In an open letter to culture secretary Jeremy Hunt, Sir Michael gave an increasingly demanding workload as the main reason for his decision to leave.

With a new government in power, the BBC Trust looks set to have to make some difficult adjustments.

Its role the both support the BBC’s independence and also as its regulator has been criticised, and Jeremy Hunt is known to have ‘serious reservations’ about the Trust.

Hunt has also said that the BBC must provide better value for money, while a reduction in the licence fee is also likely.

YouGov chairman Roger Parry and BBC trustee Dame Patricia Hodgson have been suggested as likely candidates to replace Sir Michael.
