In an interview with the Express, Virgin Media’s chief executive has been singing the praises of the Virgin Media Player (VMP), saying “it will make people fall in love with their television sets again”.

The internet TV service is currently available in beta for Virgin’s XL TV customers who also have a Virgin Media broadband connection.

VMP will allow people to access YouTube and on-demand films directly from their television set.

It will also be possible to order books and DVDs through the television.

Speaking at the Nokia World conference recently, Virgin Media’s Head of Product Development, Rob Wells, said that by 2012 viewers should be able to watch TV anywhere and at any time.

It will be possible to start watching a programme on your living room TV, then pause it and finish watching it later on a mobile device such as a phone or laptop.

Wells said that the only thing stopping this service being rolled out was ongoing talks with TV and movie production companies over the digital rights to programming.
