Rim BlackPad to be unveiled next week?

Rim is one of the hopefuls with a tablet device which it hopes will grab a slice of the profitable slate market the iPad currently dominates.

The Wall Street Journal brings word that the tablet is expected to be unveiled in a conference over in the States next week. It will almost certainly be called the BlackPad, as the company has registered that domain name.

Besides, what else would they call it? The StrawBerry Slate? That seems unlikely, not unless they want to compete with the Toshiba Folio 100 and Dell Streak in the daftest device name category.

Rim’s BlackPad is rumoured to have plumped for a 7 inch screen, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a smaller size than Apple‘s tablet with its 10 inch display. Speculation also points to it having a camera, and possibly a second one for video conferencing (we’d expect the latter to be the case).

One of the biggest surprises for us, when we initially reported on the device, was that Rim isn’t going to use BlackBerry 6 to power the slate, but a fresh QNX operating system.

Various sources have the BlackPad street date pencilled in as before the end of the year, so if an announcement isn’t coming next week, it will certainly be soon if Rim hopes to stick to that plan.
