3 to offer free Facebook

3 is offering its customers access to a stripped down version of mobile Facebook which will be completely free of charge to use.

The new 0.facebook.com site allows users to log on from any mobile web browser without having to face any data charges, but it’s not quite the full fat Facebook experience.

It does, however, encompass all the key features, such as posting status updates, viewing your news feed, messaging and adding comments. What it doesn’t have is any video or photos, as it’s optimized for speed.

You can click through to photos if you wish, though, going to the normal Facebook site, but you will then be charged as you would for normal surfing on your data plan.

Initially, the service will be available through 50 operators in some 45 countries, with doubtless more network operators to follow. 3 has promised that the free service will definitely remain free for at least a year, and as such it’s an obvious draw for social network addicts looking for a new contract.
