Pinger launches VoIP calls

by Janet Harris

Pinger’s Textfree app, which provides free phone numbers and texting services, is being extended to allow iPod touch and iPhone users to use their device as a phone.

The service, which works with WiFi and 3G networks, will offer free or low-cost VoIP calls, putting Pinger into competition with Skype.

The downside is that only a limited number of calls each month will be free.

When these are used up, users will be able to earn more by downloading apps from other companies.
Pinger generates revenue through advertising and has already served 1.2 billion ads on 4 billion text messages.
