After various rumours have been flying around about exactly when Microsoft will launch its new mobile operating system, the company has confirmed the exact date.

And the earlier rumours turned out to be correct, as Windows Phone 7 will indeed be launched in New York on October 11th, a week today.

PC World pointed out the official invite on the Microsoft site, which is entitled: “Windows Phone 7 Worldwide Launch Event at the NYC Microsoft Technology Centre”.

The event starts at 3pm local time, so that’s 8pm here, and of course we shall be reporting on what goes down.

How long it will be after the official launch before WP7 handsets are actually getting into the mitts of the public, however, is the real question here. That’s likely to be later this month.
