Skype announces Android app

October 5, 2010

Android mobile users can now access free and low cost calls with Skype’s latest app.

The app can be downloaded from Google’s App Market to Android phones running 2.1 or above.

Users will then be able to call other Skype users in the UK for free, over Wi-Fi, although data charges may apply to calls over GPRS, EDGE or 3G.

The app also allows users to IM chat with multiple friends at once and update their profile from the handset.

Skype contacts can be synchronised with existing contacts on the phone, allowing users to place Skype calls direct from the contact list.

Reports are also coming in that Skype is planning to appoint Cisco Systems’ executive, Tony Bates, as its new chief.

He will replace Josh Silverman, who has headed up Skype since 2008.
